My Review: In all honesty this book isn't of much use to me at the moment because I don't share my life with dogs. However a few things factored into my decision to accept this book for review:

1) I'm a huge fan of Amy Shojai's writing - especially her blog and debut thriller Lost and Found.

2) I'm always eager to expand my knowledge of pets of all kinds.

3) As soon as my living situation warrants I fully expect to add a dog (or two) to my life. Because I will always have cats in my life, I found the section on cat/dog introductions to be especially informative.

I think this isn't as much the type of book you'd pick up and read cover to cover, but one you'd refer to as issues arise. It's an invaluable tool that any pet owner should have on their bookshelf.

Getting Skinny Blog Tour with Monique Domovitch: Meet Jackie Chan the Yorkie

You could say that Getting Skinny is a love story. It was inspired by my beloved little Yorkie, Jackie Chan.

Jackie had been killed in a horrific accident not very long before I started working on Getting Skinny, leaving me almost paralyzed with grief. She had been more than a pet to me. At the time, I had been divorced and single for twenty years, and during the last eight of those years, Jackie had been my closest family—my little girl. Anybody who has lost a pet can tell you how devastating such a loss can be.

It took a long time, over a year, before I was able to mention her name without tears. But there came a day when I could not only talk about her, but even laugh at all the crazy antics of that little devil.

One day I was telling a new friend about some of Jackie’s adventures, when she said something about that dog having such personality, she should be a character in a book.

That was when the idea first began to take root. At the time, I was already writing an outline for a comedy murder-mystery, and I thought, why not? Why couldn’t I make Jackie one of the main characters?

Gradually the idea took hold. All I had to do was retell a few of the hilarious adventures Jackie had put me through, and readers would fall in love with her, just as I had.

From that moment on, the book almost wrote itself. I remember my fingers just flying on the keyboard, the pages adding up at an astonishing speed. I found myself laughing out loud as I wrote, remembering how funny Jackie was. More than that, there were times when I felt as if she was right there, watching me the way she used to, with her head tilted as if she was trying to make sense of what I was doing. I had recently remarried and my husband’s office was right across the hall from mine. I was laughing so hard while typing away, that he kept asking me to read him what I’d just written. It wasn’t long until I felt that this manuscript was a winner. I must have been right because this was the novel that helped me land an agent, and then my first book deal, and then not long after, a second book deal. And it was all thanks to Jackie Chan.

That was four years ago. Now I have two other little dogs. There is Charlie Chan—a little three-pound male I rescued three years ago and who bears an uncanny resemblance to Jackie—and there is Gaia—a little dog I was told was a Yorkie when I got her, but who turned out to be a Silky. I love them both, but I still find myself missing Jackie, which just goes to prove, a woman never forgets her first love.

I love you Jackie Chan. And I know whoever reads Getting Skinny will love you too.

Owning a restaurant is as crazy for Nicky Landry as an alcoholic owning a bar. But despite having to cram herself into a body shaper to look decent in a dress, life is pretty good. American Cocker Spaniel for Adoption

This little girl was rescued from a neglectful home and is receiving medical care; she’ll be looking for a loving home once she’s squared away. She’s round like a watermelon from lack of exercise, and her jelly belly shakes when she plays, so that’s what I call her, Jelly. Since we’re both working on a diet, she’ll be slimmed down when she’s ready for adoption and her new family may want to name her something more suitable.

Jelly was covered in fleas when she was rescued and taken to Canine Corner for grooming. The staff said the fleas were actually embedded in her skin and it took 3 hours to scrub, clip, and fuss over her. Then, Jelly was taken to a vet clinic where she received rabies vaccine, a dewormer, and topical flea treatment. She had a blood test, and we’re waiting for results.

Because Jelly’s abdomen sags, she was likely used to breed a few litters of Cocker Spaniel puppies. We’re not sure if she is still intact or if she has been spayed. We asked the lab who’s testing her blood to look for the presence of leutenizing hormone, which will indicate whether she still has ovaries and is an intact female. If leutenizing hormone is high, Jelly will have been spayed. If leutenizing hormone is low, Jellie will be an intact dog so a spay surgery (ovariohysterectomy) will be scheduled. If Jelly requires surgery, we’ll see to it that she receives laser therapy and excellent pain control after.

Jelly is scheduled for dental treatment tomorrow. We’ll start her on the antibiotic Clavamox tonight and she’ll receive it twice a day for a week or two -- depending upon how infected her mouth is. Jelly will also be given probiotics. Probiotics prevent Clavamox from wiping out the good bacteria in her gut while it kills the bad bacteria in her mouth.

In the last two days, Jelly’s life has completely changed and she’s been an angel through the whole exercise. She walks politely on leash, enjoys being petted but doesn’t demand affection, and rests quietly on her bed chewing a pizzle stick. Her favourite spot is the dog bed at the front window so she can watch outside, resting with her chin on the bumper and staring out at the birds. Last night, Jelly chose to sleep on the dog bed in the bedroom, and she didn’t make a peep.

Jelly may have gotten chubby because she was never taken on walks or she may have gotten chubby because she has arthritis and doesn’t like to walk. To help her lose weight and have comfortable joints, we’ll start her on a raw food diet along with small amounts of sardines, liver &, veggies. She’ll receive Missing Link and we’ll see if she needs joint supplement like Sasha’s Blend or Recovery. We’d like to have her feel like skipping when she’s ready for adoption.

Yesterday's News Book Tour: A Day in the Life of a Self-Professed Dog-a-holic, by Sam Cheever

I own 13 dogs. No, I’m not a breeder and Yes, they all live inside my house. In fact, half of them sleep on the bed with us at night. My days are filled with such exciting and glamorous tasks as cleaning up vomit, snagging fur tumbleweeds off the floor, and wiping eye-boogies from sweet, brown eyes. Sound glamorous? Well of course it’s wonderful! But there are other things too. I find myself negotiating with a plethora of pushy but adorable dachshunds for space on the bed or convincing them that it is NOT okay to eat the delivery guy, explaining to my giant Great Danes that it’s rude to put your paws on the kitchen counter (or my shoulders, or the doorbell, or my office window to peek in at me when you want to come in the house), and “convincing” my border collie mixes that they need to stay in the yard, rather than traveling 2 miles through the woods to the river where life is oh so much more interesting.

Intrigued? Confused? Disgusted?

All of the above? #:0)

No worries, I understand that most people wouldn’t choose to be the fur-free mom to 13 assorted sized, temperament-varied fur babies. But for those of you who think a turtle in an aquarium constitutes a full time job, let me try to explain.

First, my husband and I LOVE dogs. I know this probably comes as quite a shock to you but we do. We rescue dogs who have had a rough start or which are heading for an even rougher end and give them loving, comfortable forever homes. The hard part for us isn’t deciding to adopt a new fur baby, it’s NOT taking in every one we see!

Second, other than our children, we don’t spend money on anything else. We don’t vacation because we love our little hobby farm and menagerie so much we don’t feel the need to travel somewhere else for fun. We don’t buy cars or jewelry or any of the other stuff people tend to spend their money on. We buy dog food, collar bling, and vet care. #:0)

Third, our dogs are a hobby, a constant source of entertainment, and a source of never-ending love.

Fourth, as a writer, I’m all about watching, listening and learning. Believe it or not, I learn a lot about people from watching my dogs. Dogs have the whole “interacting in a society” thing down at its most basic level. My dogs have their own pack (literally) and I’m the alpha (hubby is my beta #:0). The dynamics of the pack are fascinating and the dogs are not happy or comfortable until they understand where they fit in the hierarchy. So our biggest challenge from day to day is keeping everybody hole-free until the hierarchy is ironed out and set in stone. The only position that never changes when we add a new dog is the alpha. Me. That’s a necessity because somebody always has to be in charge. And so far nobody’s been willing to fight me for the top spot. (My husband considered it, briefly, once. But I smacked him down with a double-barreled eye glare and he immediately fell whimpering to the floor belly up.) LOL

Our days are busy. Simple things like getting a delivery (see above) or having repairs done around the home can be exciting affairs. Imagine driving down a driveway and seeing 13 dogs flying toward you. My dogs are very sweet, but there’s that pack mentality thing that can bite any visitor to our house on the butt (literally). Dogs in a pack get excited and will do things they normally wouldn’t do. So we always try to impress on our visitors to let us know when they’re coming so we can get the dogs inside first.

Fortunately most of our delivery guys are savvy. Our UPS guy brings cookies and keeps track of the pack. He’ll even ask when he doesn’t see one of the dogs for a while. He’s a great guy. Then there’s the brain-cell-challenged FedEx guy who climbs right out of the truck when the dogs are out, then panics, and runs from them. Yeesh! You might as well paint yourself with gravy and yell, I’m tender and yummy, come and get me.

So our lives are noisy, messy, and very busy. Some weeks we spend most of our time at the vet and others we spend filling in holes in the yard or cleaning up mud on the carpet. It’s challenging and unkempt and wonderful. And I can’t imagine living any other way.

In Memory of Skeezix

Hey everybody, it's Tara again! Boy, three posts in one week...am I taking over or what???

Actually I'm back today for a very sad occasion. Cats all around the blogosphere are posting their remembrances of a very special kitty who crossed the Rainbow Bridge recently. Skeezix was one of the very first cat bloggers, the original Flat Cat, and a divine Feline Fashionista who made it sexy for little boys to wear pink. Cat bloggers were asked to go pink for Skeezix today, but our blog is always pink...is there another color???

Mommy and I are actually quite sad that being new to cat blogging we barely knew Skeezix. We've been visiting a lot of the tribute blogs today and have to say that we've already fallen in love with him. (You have to check out Katie and Waffles tribute today showing what a pioneer Skeezix was in true western style...I hope that when each of us kitties is called to the Bridge that we are picked up in that pink covered wagon!)

So rest in peace, sweet Skeezix. Maybe you can teach all the kitties in kitty heaven how to blog so that they can stay in touch with their Mommies back here on Earth...wouldn't that be paw-some?

Tara Interviews Miss Marple from Lorna Barrett's Booktown Mystery Series

MEOW! Hey everybody, Tara here with a very special guest! I'm so, so excited to have had the opportunity to interview one of the most popular felines in mystery fiction...Miss Marple from Lorna Barrett's Booktown mystery series. I think it's super cool that we both have literary names...she from the famous Agatha Christie sleuth, me from Gone with the Wind.

Mommy asked me to make sure I let you know that the 7th book in the series, Not the Killing Type, will be in stores on July 2nd, and the paperback edition of Murder on the Half Shelf will be released the very same day!

Miss Marple, how did you come to live with Tricia?
I came from a kill shelter. I was very glad that Tricia came and rescued me before I could be euthanized.

What is your day typically like?

I start the day on Tricia's bed. Once we get up, she feeds me and we go down to the shop. It's an exhausting job working in a bookstore, and I need to take eight or ten naps a day, but in between I'm working just as hard as my human counterparts. (Being amazingly cute is a difficult job.)

Do you like being a bookshop mascot?

It's my duty to all I can to make our customers feel welcome. When I'm not napping, I try to greet them individually. Sometimes I even deigned to sit on someone's lap, but of course that doesn't mean I'm disloyal to Tricia. She must come first in my affections.

Did you know we have something in common...literary names! My name comes from Mommy's love for Gone with the Wind! Do you think you share any characteristics with Miss Marple the sleuth?

I have gray hair, that's why Tricia gave me the name. But I think it's my sense of curiosity that makes my name perfect for my personality.

How is Angelica's pup Sarge doing? Do you two get along?

Ick. He's a DOG. He's yappy. He steals my food. I won't go into his more loathsome traits.

What kind of mischief do you get into in Not the Killing Type?

Mischief? I never get into mischief. I'm a dignified cat. We don't do mischief.

Do you know what's coming up for you and Tricia?

There are dark times ahead in the next book, BOOK CLUBBED, which comes out in July 2014. Very dark times indeed. But ... I have faith that things will work out in the end.

Lastly, can you tell me a few of your favorite things?

The red bug taunts me. I will catch it one day. It will NOT beat me. I do NOT like being rubbed on the tummy. Those who do so risk my fangs. I eat wet and dry food. But if I had my way, it would be shrimp 24/7. I like sleeping best on Tricia's down duvet. It's warm and soft and comfy.

The Joys of a New Series, by Jess Michaels

Hello and thanks so much to Melissa for having me here today! If you don’t know who I am my name is Jess Michaels and I write historical erotic romance. I’ve published or contracted 19 short stories, novellas and novels for Red Sage Publishing, Avon, self-publishing and Samhain Publishing. Phew! It’s a lot of books, actually and many of them in series (The Albright Sisters series and The Mistress Matchmaker series are my most popular). 

But on July 2, just a week from today, I’ll have a new book out. It’s called TAKEN BY THE DUKE and is the first book in a new series, “The Pleasure Wars”. Think of Romeo and Juliet, but in the Regency period and with tons of sex. Oh and, spoiler alert, no one kills themselves. So… don’t worry.

It’s always wondrous and weird and scary for an author to have a new series out. Why?

Well, it’s wondrous because it’s the beginning of a whole new universe in a way! By the time a first book in a series is out, I’ve finished the second and have started on the third. I’m immersed and in love with the characters and so ready to share their stories. There’s all the promise in the world with a new series, both in how readers will feel about it and how it will perform (which authors all think about and hope about even if they pretend they don’t).

It’s weird because publishing is always a little weird. You wait and wait and wait, then suddenly there’s a book out and it’s like a child who you hope will flourish when it goes out into the world all alone. Except you’ve got a webcam in its dorm room, so… yeah.

And it’s scary because even though you can peek on that “webcam”, there’s not a lot you can do to help the book. Oh, I do appearances on blogs like this one, I post on Facebook and send out newsletters, but ultimately by the time a book comes out I’ve pretty much done what I can and I have to set it free. I hope readers will love it. I hope people will buy it and that they’ll be excited for the next book and the next one.

A new series is filled with opportunity. And I’m so excited to see this next venture be let loose upon the world.

Cat World Domination Day

Hey everybody, it's Tara! Don't tell anyone, but Mommy had a book review scheduled to post today but I snuck onto our computer, deleted it, and wrote my own blog post. (tee hee)

It's a very special day, you see. It's my cat blogger friend Sparkle's birthday, also known as Cat World Domination Day! (Which I believe should be everyday, but I digress.)

Truthfully, I already dominate my little corner of the world - I get whatever food I want, my litter pan is always spic and span, I can nap anytime and anywhere I like, Mommy is always at my beck and call. I may not be the healthiest cat around, but I am loved, worshipped, and adored.

Sadly, I know that for many cats life is not like mine. They are alone, scared, abandoned, abused, hungry, and unloved. That's why in honor of Cat World Domination Day, I envision:

* A world where everyone appreciates the awesomeness of the world's most perfect animal - the cat.

* A house for every cat, and a cat for every home.
