Review: Kneading to Die by Liz Mugavero

Blurb: The first book in an exciting new cozy mystery series, featuring a gourmet pet food chef and her Maine coon cat, Nutty, is set in a New England storybook town that may not be so idyllic.

Maybe the best thing that ever happened to Kristan "Stan" Connor was losing her high-stress public relations job. Now there's plenty of time to spend in her sleepy new Connecticut town working on her dream: baking healthy, organic pet treats!

Before long the neighborhood dogs are escaping their yards to show up at Stan's doorstep, begging for the kinds of homemade treats her Maine coon cat Nutty loves so much. Stan's pet-loving neighbors are thrilled with the new options available to their furry family members, but not everyone loves Stan and her newfangled ways.

It seems Carole Morganwick, the town vet, is from the old school of pet care. When Stan swallows her pride and brings a very unwilling Nutty in for a checkup, she not only finds Carole dead under a pile of kibble - she's the prime suspect!

My Review: I have been looking forward to this book for *months*...ever since I first saw that adorable cover on Amazon. Since I finally got my hands on it on release day and absolutely devoured it, the only thing I can say is this is a cozy world I never want to leave! The setting, the characters, the pets...everything about it is a cozy lover's dream come true.

Stan (short for Kristan) has moved into a darling Victorian home in Frog Ledge, CT, after losing her high-stress job in the city and is looking forward to building a new life for herself. She immediately begins making friends with her new 2-legged and 4-legged neighbors: alpaca farmers/B&B owners Char and Ray and their pup Savannah; coffee shop owner Izzy, her boxer Baxter and poodle Elvira; bar owner Jake and his Weimaraner Duncan; animal homeopath Amara and her golden retriever; Happy Cow Dairy's Hal and Emmalee. Her Maine coon cat Nutty and foster pup Scruffy are her constant, most loyal companions

Stan's world starts to crumble as one by one her new friends turn on her after she finds the body of town vet Carole Morganwick with a needle in her neck and her body covered with kibble. Stan is the newcomer in town, she knew how to administer medications while helping with her friend Nikki's transport group Pets' Last Chance, and the fact that Nutty's before hours appointment with Carole wasn't recorded in Carole's appointment book, combine to make her the prime suspect.

After many twists and turns the murder is solved and Stan realizes she's found her calling and is exactly where she was meant to be. This is one of the best cozy debuts of the year and I can't wait until the next book to see Stan's new business become a huge success!
