Deadly Policy Book Tour: An Email from Millie Morrow, by Mitzi Kelly

deadlypolicy-widget

Hello there. My name is Mitzi Kelly and I’m the author of the Silver Sleuths Mystery Series. Recently, I received an e-mail from Millie Morrow, the oldest in the trio of amateur sleuths comprising the main characters in the series. It seems Millie is having some issues with the way I’m developing her, and, even though she is going to be upset with me, I thought I’d share her thoughts to see if my readers agree with her.

Dear Mitzi,

Since you refuse to answer your cell phone, I am forced to contact you via e-mail. I’ll have you know that I’m using my computer—the one you so glibly suggested in Deadly Policy that I wouldn’t have the technological savvy to use. (Impressed you with my ability to use the italics button, didn’t I?)

And that brings me to the crux of the problem. I may be eighty-two-years old, but I’m not dead, yet!  I’ve been looking back over some of my scenes in The Silver Sleuths Mystery Series and it appears to me that you go out of your way to highlight my age at every opportunity. For example, what’s so unusual about an older woman having a shotgun for protection? You make it sound like it is some big deal. And anybody could have mistaken that can of bug spray for hair spray, regardless of their age.

Another thing that has my bloomers in a wad is the fact that you refuse to let me drive. Have I been in a wreck? No! Have I run over anybody? No! Still, you purposely have Trish and Edna do all the driving. It’s not fair and I resent the implication that I’m a terror on the road.

You also seem to have a problem with the way I communicate with our chief of police, Henry Espinoza. What would you have me do? Tip-toe up to the man and bow before I beg him to listen to me? The man’s a dingbat and he’s not going to take any of us seriously if I don’t knock some sense into him every once in a while. Don’t you remember that in Classic Revenge he said that we were interfering? The nerve of the man! Especially when we were the ones who figured out who murdered Susan.

I hate to go on and on, but I just don’t think I’m getting the respect I deserve. You must have forgotten that I’m the one who single-handedly saved Trish’s and Edna’s backsides in the first two books in the series. Why, we could all be dead if it wasn’t for me! And you made it seem like such a unique situation because of my age. I’ll have you know I’m plenty able to take care of myself and my friends, as you’ll soon find out in the third book.

I think you’ve got this all backwards, Mitzi. I’m a strong, independent, attractive and vivacious woman who happens to be in her eighties, not an eighty-year-old woman who happens to be strong, independent, attractive and vivacious. See? It’s all in the placement of the adjectives.

I hope you take my comments seriously and make some changes in future adventures. If not, I can’t promise you that I’m going to behave. If you think I’ve been a little eccentric so far, you haven’t seen anything yet!

I have to get back to work now. Our third book is coming to an end and I think that strange man who sat beside us at the restaurant may be the one who killed the stockbroker. I have a feeling I’m going to have my hands full getting Trish and Edna to investigate him. But, don’t worry, because of my age I’ll convince them to listen to me.

I would appreciate it if you would place this letter in my employment folder. I hope I won’t have to remind you of my complaints, but as my author, you can be as hard-headed as me!

Warm regards,

Millie Morrow

Do you see, my dear readers, what I have to put up with? I hope I’ve garnered the appropriate sympathy for how difficult it is to control a character like Millie. When she described herself as “strong, independent, attractive and vivacious, I wanted to insert stubborn, obnoxious and eccentric, but that would only give her something else to complain about.

I haven’t decided how I’m going to reply to her letter yet. I’m afraid my true feelings about her will become obvious. If Millie realizes that I consider her an amazing woman full of spunk and vigor with a heart the size of Texas and an unwavering loyalty to those she loves, and a sense of responsibility to those less fortunate than she is, then she’ll lord it over me for the next ten books. You see, I believe her age is an asset, part of her charm, and I fully plan on exploiting it as often as I can.  Just don’t tell her, please . . .

I’d love to know what you think of the whole situation. Your thoughts may help me figure out how to respond to her. I appreciate you letting me use this space to vent, and I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Deadly Policy, A Silver Sleuths Mystery Series, by Mitzi Kelly, from Avalon Books

Synopsis: When a sudden rash of stolen cars brings Millie Morrow’s daughter under suspicion for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, Millie convinces her two best friends, Trish Anderson and Edna Radcliff, to help her find out who is trying to frame Michelle. Knowing the odds are against them that they will be able to discover who the thugs are, Trish and Edna nevertheless go through the motions of investigating, hoping Millie will feel productive in helping her daughter while the police do the real detective work.

But the situation becomes much more serious when a body is found in front of the insurance office Michelle works for. And even though the evidence pointing to an inside job is purely circumstantial, it could still destroy Michelle, something the ladies are determined to prevent. They’re going to have to work fast to present a different theory for the police to consider, though, since Millie has once again alienated Henry Espinoza, the chief of police. And she’s alienated someone else, too, if the suspicious incidents suddenly plaguing her are anything to go by.

Keeping Millie out of trouble while attempting to clear her daughter’s name will take every ounce of skill . . . or luck . . . the amateur sleuths possess.

Author Bio:
Mitzi grew up in Texas, loving everything about the huge state. From the stark beauty of the desert plains, to the majestic glory of the mountains, to the intense power of the ocean, she's never had a desire to live anywhere else. Traveling is nice, but there's no place like Texas!

She was raised in El Paso with her three brothers, and credits her parents, Lewis and Lucretia Rothman, for providing an idyllic childhood. There hasn't been a sport invented that the family was not involved in, and Mitzi vividly remembers weekends where the family rushed from a gymnastics meet to a football game and then to the golf course, and still somehow fit in chores and meals! Her parents are her true heroes and there aren't enough words to express her gratitude.

Her family relocated to Houston, but Mitzi moved to San Antonio with her grandmother and landed her first job where she found she had a love for bookkeeping and making numbers work. In 1981 she married her soul mate and best friend, John, and in 1982 their son, John Lewis, was born. Mitzi thoroughly enjoys the moments her husband steps in as her "co-plotter" to add spice to a scene with his unique sense of humor. With the love and support from the two most important men in her life, Mitzi has had the freedom to explore a myriad of interests and that's when she discovered she loved to write. Before tackling novels, Mitzi wrote several feature articles for Our Ageless Times and a current event article for Builder/Architect.

From My Journal: Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand

Inspired by my many book journals, this feature spotlights books I've read and loved in the past that I wish to bring to your attention.

Blurb: Seabiscuit was one of the most electrifying and popular attractions in sports history and the single biggest newsmaker in the world in 1938, receiving more coverage than FDR, Hitler, or Mussolini. But his success was a surprise to the racing establishment, which had written off the crooked-legged racehorse with the sad tail. Three men changed Seabiscuit’s fortunes:

Charles Howard was a onetime bicycle repairman who introduced the automobile to the western United States and became an overnight millionaire. When he needed a trainer for his new racehorses, he hired Tom Smith, a mysterious mustang breaker from the Colorado plains. Smith urged Howard to buy Seabiscuit for a bargain-basement price, then hired as his jockey Red Pollard, a failed boxer who was blind in one eye, half-crippled, and prone to quoting passages from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Over four years, these unlikely partners survived a phenomenal run of bad fortune, conspiracy, and severe injury to transform Seabiscuit from a neurotic, pathologically indolent also-ran into an American sports icon.

Author Laura Hillenbrand brilliantly re-creates a universal underdog story, one that proves life is a horse race.

My Review: (With horse racing's Triple Crown beginning next week, I found this to be a timely choice. This is exactly what I wrote in my book journal dated 5/13/05 immediately after finishing the book.) I am so in love with this book that it has become a part of me. Reading it, I was in the 1930s Depression, I was at the racetrack watching some of the greatest horse races in our history. There is great sadness and tragedy, amazing triumphs, a great love between men and horse, intrique (w/Seabiscuit's look-alike Grog). It is a Cinderella story of 4 creatures, united for a brief but magical period of time, as they spark the imagination of an entire country that is looking for something to believe in. Howard, Smith, and Pollard are an unlikely trio brought together by a horse long given up on, all of whom I felt like I knew personally the book is so magnificently written. There is so much history here, too...even the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The descriptions of a jockey's hard life are heartbreaking. I cried my eyes out at Seabiscuit's fatal heart attack at only age 14. His huge heart couldn't guarantee him a long life. I mourn finishing this book. Nothing I go to now can compare. I am in love with Seabiscuit, both the horse and one of the greatest books of our time.

How to Care For a Day-Old Kitten

Kittens are usually cared for by heir moms. However, like all things in nature, Darwinianism kicks in and only few of the offspring will survive. I have encountered twice the particular case of a cat who simply will not care for her babies, being equally disinterested in whether they live or die. So for the best part of the next four weeks I acted like a nursing cat mother for three little kittens. Needless to say, when they're a few hours old, they're hardly bigger than a very small mouse each.

There's two things they need to survive: warmth and food. You can solve the first issue with a couple of 2 litres plastic bottles filled with hot water that you put it in their nesting place. A shoe box will suffice for that. Also, try making them comfortable by adding a towel or any cloth you won't need ever again so they have a soft floor. The water will need changing every few hours, depending on how fast it will cool.

Next issue is a bit of a nuisance. You'll have to buy a baby bottle for kittens. There are many available at pet shops, you cannot improvise around it, trust me on that, I've tried. The thing that came nerare to a baby bottle was a 2ml syringe, but you run the risk of pumping too fast and choking them. Plus, they can't draw from it. So go get the baby bottle. Then for the food. You can either buy special powder milk that has all the surplus they need from a lactating mother, just ask the veterinarian for it, or use your own milk from the store. Either way is fine, the powder milk is pricey but better, but they won't die for the lack of it. Next buy eggs, a whole basket of them, you're going to need them. Break an egg and clear the yolk. Only the yolk! Put the yolk in a cup. Add a bit of milk and mix. Then add a spoon of honey and milk up to about 200ml and mix. Honey helps the kittens' digestion a lot, it's not just for the taste of it. When you have about 200ml of mixed product make sure it's warm and fill up the baby bottle. Then pick each of them up and start feeding them. You'll have to be patient, although at first they're probably be starving and will draw like there's no tomorrow. You will have to repeat that every three hours and twice at night.

My advice is to have more food mixed so you only have to warm it, it saves a lot of time not having to mix it all each and every time they need feeding. After four weeks they will probably learn to drink by themselves and you're off the hook, although there's no timeframe guaranteed about that. I had one crazy kitten who refused to let go of the baby bottle for three months!

If you follow these steps it will be hard on your part but your kittens WILL live. Constant feeding and warmth is all there really is to it. And patience.

Are Cats Smart or Dumb?

Love them or hate them cats are just hard to ignore. I love cats, but I have often wondered about just how smart they really are? For that reason I've collected a few videos of cats and their reactions to things! So you be the judge and tell me what you think!

Over the years, I've read, or heard so many different things about whether our friends are smart or clever and now I have a few words for you folks. Probably most of would say that cats are not smart because unlike dogs they aren't obedient, won't do tricks, and won't come when they are called. But, that's not a reason to call them stupid, as cats only do things when they want.

Yep, that's the thing with cats! They seems to do what they want and when they want. So if we love them enough and treat them right, maybe then they will be more willing to cooperate with us.

Anyway here are some videos of cats doing "clever things" and not so "clever things".

Meet the white cat that goes nuts after seeing its reflection in the mirror! This kitty is so popular at the moment that over the last few days it got more than 500,000 views on the Internet! It appears to me as if the angry white kitty has an imaginary conversation with his white, fluffy foe. And judging by the sounds it seems like they are having a pretty tense conversation.

Anyway, it would be better for you to avoid any contact with the white crazy cat as one can only imagine what would happen if the cat gets mad at you! Yep, it's that serious! Or this kitty here. Now, this is a way funnier situation! This cat gets totally confused after a dog shows up on the screen while his owner plays the video game 'Assassin's Creed' 3.

At first the cat seems so calm and peaceful while its owner is playing Assassin's Creed, but that comes to end as soon as it sees dogs on the screen! It flips out and starts searching the dogs behind the TV screen, because they show up and then they walk off the screen! But unfortunately for the cat, there are no dogs to be found behind the big TV screen! And that goes on and on.

Nonetheless, just like people, some cats are clever, some are not!

The Root of All Trouble by Heather Webber / Ebook Release of Historical Romances

Currently Reading

Blurb: WHEN IT RAINS, IT POURS...

When a spring storm rolls through Freedom, Ohio, landscape designer Nina Quinn expects to get her hands dirty with the mess left behind.

But after high winds uproot a tree, revealing the corpse of a man inside its rotted hollow, Nina quickly realizes that cleaning up after Mother Nature’s fury is the least of her worries.

It soon becomes clear that there is no lack of suspects in the man’s untimely death. As a shady contractor and philanderer, he’d angered a lot of people before he disappeared, including some of Nina’s closest friends.

With the help of her police detective ex-husband, a mysterious coroner’s investigator, her formerly-felonious employees and her zany neighbors, Nina sets out to uncover a killer...before another victim ends up planted six feet under.

My Review: The trademark of Heather Webber/Heather Blake's wonderful mysteries is a multitude of sub-plots that make for a fast-paced read that is over way too soon. Then you're left waiting for your next chance to spend time with a cast of characters that have come to feel like your own friends and neighbors.

This 7th book in the delightful Nina Quinn series has it all...zany (yet loveable) friends, family, and co-workers, an engagement, a baby, a mysterious new coroner that bears a striking resemblance to a (dead) man from Nina's past, scary Midwestern spring storms....and oh yes, a local contractor found dead inside an uprooted tree. (I love it when murder victims in cozies turn up in unusual places!!!)

The ending is a doozie, and my next peek into Nina's life can't come fast enough! (And with every book, sweet little blind, deaf, incontinent chihuahua Gracie steals my heart a little more!)

Last week was a huge one for Heather Webber fans, as in addition to this new Nina Quinn mystery, she also re-released her first three books (historical romances) in ebook form.
