Angel Gone Bad by Sabine Starr

Currently Reading
Blurb: By day Angel Morgan reads her thrilling dime novels about the Wild West to the corseted members of the Red River Book club. But when the sun sets on the Texas border her own life proves to be stranger than fiction, especially when a friend’s life depends on her utilizing her many secret talents…

Rune Wulfsson is no stranger to Angel Morgan’s talents—the ones that left him burning for more and the ones that left him wrongfully locked up in jail. Now that he’s no longer behind bars, he’s riding hard for some good old fashioned revenge. But first he needs Angel’s help in hunting down some horse thieves, kidnappers and killers. Tough enough without Angel and Rune’s hands all over each other. It gets worse. But sometimes, bad is good…

My Review: I've long been fascinated by the dime novels of the Old West, so this second book in Sabine Starr's Gone Bad series held great interest for me. Angel is a schoolmarm by day, a dime romance novelist by night, and is having a hard enough time separating her two lives when a ghost from her past sweeps in seeking revenge. Hitting the trails with Rune ends up giving her fodder for her novels for years to come as they face one action-packed adventure after another.

I enjoy the paranormal aspects of this series, and in this particular book I was interested in the Anti-Horse Thief Association, something I had never heard of before. It's obvious Sabine knows the Indian Territory of Texas and Oklahoma and makes the West come alive!

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley with the request for a review. Be sure to stop by tomorrow for a wonderful guest post from Sabine Starr and a chance to win a copy of Angel Gone Bad!

Peach Pies and Alibis by Ellery Adams

Currently Reading
Blurb: Ella Mae LeFaye’s Charmed Pie Shoppe is wildly popular in Havenwood, Georgia—which is not surprising since Ella Mae can lace her baked goods with enchantments. The shop’s extraordinary success seems destined to continue when Ella Mae meets an engaged couple who hire her to handle the dessert buffet at their wedding.

But Ella Mae has a lot on her plate. She is also searching for the origin of her magical powers—and hoping to determine if the spark of attraction she feels for the handsome Hugh Dylan is authentic or just her new abilities gone awry.

Then Ella Mae discovers a high-standing member of the community dead, and a wedding guest becomes seriously ill at the event she’s catering. Now she’ll have to use all her sleuthing skills and culinary talents to prove her pies don’t contain a killer ingredient . . .

My Review: It never ceases to amaze me the quality of the cozy mysteries being churned out today, and in my opinion the leader of the pack is Ellery Adams. Her multifaceted stories led by a group of close-knit Southern ladies are on par with the best fiction.

This second Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery is an absolute must read for cozy lovers everywhere, so I don't want to rehash the plot and risk giving away any spoilers, but suffice it to say Ella Mae faces life-changing events, both good and bad, as she comes to grip with learning more and more about her powers and experiences an unthinkable loss. Her life is forever altered in the course of this book.

Now that she's found her place (and purpose) in Havenwood, I'm looking forward to seeing her relationship with Hugh flourish, and I'm crazy about bookshop owner Suzy and her poodle Jasmine introduced in this book. I'd love to be a part of their upcoming pizza and wine research parties! And in my mind's eye I can already picture the cover of the next book - is just has to have Ella Mae's new pink Jeep on it!

So if you're looking for a lemon icebox pie laced with December snowfall, wedding tarts that taste of love, and lamb pies that force confessions from people, enter Ella Mae LeFaye's Charmed Pie Shoppe. You may never want to leave.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher with the request for a review.

Shannon Esposito, Pet Psychic Mysteries Author, Interview/Giveaway

Tell us about your Pet Psychic Mysteries. What inspired the series?
I had just finished writing The Monarch, a darker mystery involving a pretty twisted serial killer, and felt like I needed a psychological break. So, discussing this with my daughter one day she said, "Why don't you write something lighter for fun?" I took her advice, put together my two favorite subjects--pets and the paranormal--and Darwin Winters, pet psychic, was born.

What do you have for pets? Do they inspire your animal characters?  Right now we have a 13 yr old golden retriever, a 3 yr old mastiff-mix and a 5 month old goofball of a mastiff puppy. (It's a good thing my husband is deathly allergic to cats or we'd have a houseful of those, too.) Yes, my pets and other people's pets in my life definitely provide inspiration for the animals Darwin meets.

I've always been a big fan of the mastiff breed. They're very noble, confident, intelligent and gentle, so the mastiff was an easy pick for the first book. I hope I did the breed justice in creating Karma. My quirky, sweet golden retriever is my muse for book three.

Did you always want to be a writer growing up?  Yes. A writer and a veterinarian. I'm math-challenged so writer it was. This series is the best of both worlds for me, I get to control the animal's fate and create their happy ending. Real life isn't always so kind.

What one book do you wish you had written?  Just picking one is hard. I've been inspired by so many books in my life, books that make me want to be a better writer. My favorite book of all time is probably Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, but saying I wish I had written it seems like sacrilege. I can say I wish I had the level of talent it takes to create a story like that.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?  Juliet Blackwell. Her Witchcraft Mysteries are what made me fall in love with the cozy genre. I could see Darwin visiting Lily Ivory's vintage clothing shop in California and getting in a heap of trouble helping solve a murder with her. Especially because Lily's familiar is a pig/gargoyle creature. I bet the visions Darwin would get from him would be crazy...lol!

What's your favorite way to spend a rainy day?  Well, living in the sunshine state we don't get many rainy days, we get rainy hours daily. Those are some of my favorite times to write. Give me a booming, crackling thunderstorm, candlelight and my dogs at my feet and I'm a happy writer.

What are you working on now?  Right now I'm working on Silence is Golden (Pet Psychic Mystery No. 3) and I can't wait to share it, I'm having so much fun writing it. Darwin's animal companion in this book is a golden retriever and you'll also get to meet her other sister, Willow. I'm shooting for a July release, so make sure you sign up for my newsletter at http://murderinparadise.com/ if you want to be notified when it comes out!

    Thanks for having me, Melissa!

Darwin Winters, reluctant pet psychic, is determined to leave her family’s paranormal past behind and lead a normal life. So she strikes out on her own and opens up a new pet boutique in St. Pete, Florida. When a local homeless man she befriends is found dead, and the police assume it’s a suicide, Darwin has no choice but to use her gift to help collar the killer.

She adopts his grieving mastiff, Karma—and with the dog’s help—tries to piece together the events of that fatal night. Accepting the visions is one thing, but can she solve the mystery without revealing her powers to the jaded, yet drool-worthy, detective in charge of the case? Or will the killer put an end to her psychic sleuthing and bury the truth for good?

Blog Tour: Waiting for You by Shey Stahl - Excerpt + Giveaway

Blurb: Bailey Gray is tired of her perfectly planned life. Everything about her life has been organized and lived out to the expectations set of her parents. She is the class valedictorian, has perfect grades, the perfect friends, a perfect boyfriend, basically perfect life...or so everyone thought. That's when she realizes the path planned isn't always the path chosen.

On graduation day she makes a decision. One that changes everything she thought she knew about her intended future.

On a whim, she runs away with the town rebel, Dylan Wade, in search of the unknown.

Dylan Wade isn't looking to run away from anything.

He knows what he wants as he's been waiting on it for years.

On a journey to find the unknown, they discover a friendship they once knew along the open highway and have not a care in the world. Between the yellow and white lines of the heated summer asphalt, a spark draws them together as Dylan's past and Bailey future try to ripe them apart.

Could it be that Dylan and his GTO are exactly what her perfectly planned life needs?

    Excerpt:
I woke up to the morning as the sun peeked into the room through the thin brown curtains. It took me a moment to remember where I was and what I was doing here. Growing up, I was never allowed to sleep in and when I saw the time, I panicked thinking my mother would be pushing through my door any minute with her annoyingly chipper façade.

Only I wasn’t in my room. I wasn’t even in my house.

The memories of yesterday and last night came to mind. I couldn’t believe that I confessed in a moment of sheer stupidity that I had a crush on him when we were kids and secretly had a thing for bad boys.

    Stupid of me.

I stretched a little. The bed wasn’t comfortable so my back was aching and stiff.

I noticed I was on the edge of the bed, barely hanging on so I went to shimmy over but was pushed more off the bed as Dylan groaned beside me.

Trying to move away from him and keep my place on the bed, it didn’t work. I landed on the floor, arms flailing, legs kicking as I tried to catch myself.

Dylan heard the thump and leaned over the side of the bed. “Why are you on the floor?”

“Jackass,” I replied with a sour edge to my voice as I picked myself off the floor, rubbing my ass.

Dylan swung his legs around the side of the bed and sat there for a moment looking out the window. His head hung and he removed himself from the bed reaching for his cigarettes in his jeans neatly folded on the chair next to the bed and then walked outside on the balcony, chuckling. I watched him closely, admiring the way his back muscles flexed as he walked and the tattoos that I never knew were there on his back. I wasn’t sure what they all were but they were beautiful. None seemed to be overly colorful but instead darker shades of black, gray, red and some with a navy blue. He must have noticed me staring because before he opened the door he turned and smirked.

Embarrassed, I looked down at my feet dangling off the side of the bed, noticing I need to paint my toenails. My mom would have been horrified if she would have seen them. Every Saturday morning my mom, Mercedes and her mother Teresa got together for what they called Spa Saturday at Tuscan Spa Sanctuary in Olympia.

Though they specialized in a Zen-bliss as they called it, it was torture for me and today, being Saturday, I was relieved not to have to attend.

After I regained some composure, I made my way out to the balcony where Dylan was leaning against the railing. Smoke billowing around him as he took a deep drag from his cigarette, his attention captivated by the street below.

His tattooed back and muscles distracted me. His back was to me, so I tried to decipher what the shapes and the writing that surrounded them were. There was one down his spine that appeared to be some sort of scripture in a foreign language.

The moment I opened the slider door, the heat of the morning hit me. It was a nice change from the crisp mornings of the Puget Sound. Though we hadn’t gone far, the climate in southern Oregon was noticeably different.

Dylan looked over his shoulder at me when the slider clicked against the metal frame. His smirk was present when his eyes raked down my body, taking in my black cotton shorts and small tank top.

Since he was examining me, I did the same noticing he wasn’t wearing much other than a pair of navy blue Nike workout shorts with the elastic band of his white boxer briefs peeking through the top.

Sitting in the plastic chair near the door, I drew my legs up to my chest. “Where to today?”

Dylan raised an eyebrow and then put his cigarette out against the railing, tossing it over the edge. “I told you,” he grinned but it wasn’t a grin that held, “city by city,”

    “Okay…what city today?”

“San Jose?” He suggested, raising his eyebrows again.

“Okay.” I stood up. “Can I shower first?”

His eyes shined playfully but there was more to the smile than he was leading on. “Can I join you?” He asked, looking completely serious.

    “Nope,”

“Such a tease,” he mumbled chuckling when I shook my ass a little at him as I closed the slider.

The flirting and teasing was even more apparent this morning after our confessions but it was also nice. There’s something about flirting with someone you’re comfortable around. It was playfully refreshing. I wasn’t sure where any of this was going to lead between us but it was nice not to know for once. When everything was planned for you, spontaneity and the unknown is something worth living.
