Two Redheads in One House?
By Duke Nelson, Irish Setter
From the time the red headed spit fire pulled her fancy shamsy grooming van into the local animal park where Jase and I play fetch, and tooted the horn—not just any horn, a woof woof horn —I knew Jase had fallen head over heels. After all, he fell for me the first time he saw me and I’m a redhead too.
“I’ll take that one over there,” I heard him say when I was busy trying to get back my squeaky football from the toy stealer Golden Retriever. “The Irish Setter?” The woman who cleaned out my cage and gave me water seemed surprised. I turned around and growled at her, which I shouldn’t have done because that toy stealer took my football and ran from me. I would have caught him if that woman hadn’t picked me up and put me in Jase’s arms. I even squirmed to get down and even tried to bite his big hands, but he only laughed and said, “You want a football, buddy? I’ll buy you as many as you want.”
It was history.
I guess no one ever took into consideration how this little hiccup, the human redhead, was going to impact my life. Our life. I had spent the past three years getting in shape for Jase. I couldn’t tell you how many countless hours I had spent chasing that stupid little duck he would throw or point whenever I heard a deer was around. I was gearing up for a big day of hunting by doing everything he wanted me to, fetch, run, and heal. Every single time he leaves to go on a date with the other redhead. . .Luvie Beiderman, he commands me to stay. I was use to going everywhere with him.
And what kind of name is Luvie.
Sure. She’s nice and she smells all . . .yummy. She dresses very. . .girlie. I have to jump on the couch when I hear her shoes clicking on the floor. Those things could stab my foot, and then I’d never be able to go hunting again.
So far I haven’t had to take much of a back seat to Luvie. Before she comes over, Jase takes me hunting and we still go to the park. Luvie isn’t that bad. She does wash my hair, brush my teeth, and give me treats after she grooms me. Did I mention she does it for free? Oh. . .and she does tell me I’m a good boy and lets me snuggle with her when we sit on the couch.
But something happened. Luvie doesn’t come around anymore and Jase mops around. I try to nudge against him or lay the toy duck by his feet, but he only pushes it away. He pats my head and says, “I miss her too, buddy.”
I know she will be back. But until then, I will sit by the door and wait until I hear the woof woof horn of her mobile grooming van and the click of her heels.
